Project in collaboration with Ngagyur Dongnak Chholing Gumba. A high percentage of the Makalu valley population are Buddhists, despite not having any monasteries for their regular practice throughout the valley. This issue, combined with job insecurity, economic instability, and a high degree of illiteracy, has led a portion of the population to fall into alcoholism as a way to escape problems, through the distillation of a local plant.
Hand in hand with a strong team of people from the Makalu valley, led by Sonam Chhiring Sherpa and Mingma Dorji Sherpa, president of SOS Himalaya Nepal, we have supported this project with the intention not only to rehabilitate the population but also to provide them with training in a job that they can develop in the valley for the benefit of the community.
